IV Cannula
An IV (intravenous) cannula is a small, flexible tube inserted into a vein to provide direct access to the bloodstream for the administration of fluids, medications, or nutrients. It consists of a hollow plastic catheter over a metal introducer needle, which helps guide the cannula into the vein. Once inserted, the needle is removed, leaving the soft catheter in place. IV cannulas come in different sizes, typically color-coded by gauge, with smaller gauge numbers indicating larger diameters for faster fluid delivery. They are commonly used in hospitals, emergency care, and outpatient settings for hydration, drug delivery, blood transfusions, and other medical procedures. Proper insertion technique and maintenance are crucial to prevent complications such as infection, phlebitis, or infiltration.
